One observation.

I walked through the neighbourhood where I grew up and a memory surfaced that stopped me. A kid walking between apartment blocks, looking at windows, wondering if somewhere out there was a girl waiting to love him. I recognized the feeling. I've been doing the same thing my entire adult life. Looking for someone to make the world feel safe.

One cost.

My mother's sentence installed it: everywhere is nice, but nothing beats home. Safety became something located in a person or a place. Never something I carried inside myself. Every relationship since has been a search for that feeling, and every time it left with the person.

One question.

Where did you learn that safety lives outside of you?

I'm still working on carrying the feeling instead of chasing it. The kid between the buildings is still in there.
